Signs of Depression

13:00

Todays post is a follow post from the Signs of Bulimia post I published in March. I am going to be writing about some of the signs that may point to somebody having depression so if you recognise any of these symptoms as your own or are worried that somebody in your life may be going through this then I hope that this post can help you. As stated in the signs of Bulimia post please keep in mind that just because somebody may show signs of some of these behaviours I will be pointing out, it does not mean that they definitely have depression and also somebody doesn't need to show signs of everything I am going to be discussing to have depression.

The Person with depression may feel
  • That they no longer have motivation for things they once loved doing- Depression can effect your motivation and can make you withdraw from hobbies you may have once enjoyed.
  • Upset- This is one to be careful of as everyone goes through stages of being upset, however those with depression will likely feel this way for majority of their day to day life.
  • Guilty- Depression can cause a persons thoughts to blow things out of proportion and their mind can go on overdrive leading them to feel guilty about something they may have done.
  • Anxious- People with depression often experience symptoms related to anxiety.
  • Irritable- their tolerance level can become extremely low meaning that a lot more situations/people can start to get on their nerves
  • Hopeless- They may feel like they have nothing left and nobody to turn to and that things aren't going to get better.
  • Low self esteem- People with depression will usually feel bad about themselves and a low self esteem can actually be one of the causes of depression. They will usually harshly criticise themselves and their actions.
Changes in behaviour can include
  • Changes in weight- Depression can change your appetite. It is said that it is more likely that there will be a loss of appetite however it is possible that the person may seek comfort in food and therefor their appetite will rise.
  • Loss of sex drive/low libido
  • Change in sleeping pattern- Finding it difficult to fall asleep, sleeping through out the day/ waking up through out the night. Sometimes people who suffer with depression use sleep as an escape from their daily life.
  • Lack of energy.
  • Becoming dependent on drugs, alcohol etc
  • Work becoming less efficient- work may become less important to them and therefor they may not put as much effort into it as they once were.
  • Avoidance of social events- A person with depression may withdraw from social events as they can become anxious.

There are different types of depression which is another thing to be aware of when reading this information. I will have a blog post up on the different types of depression in the future and that may be able to help you recognise what you may be going through.

I hope this information proves to be useful to some of you and please do seek help if you think you may be going through depression. You shouldn't have to deal with it on your own.
